Top Fruits also raises pigs that are naturally fed, and live contentedly outdoors amongst our fruit.
As a producer of fruit and vegetables, Top Fruits has a lot of waste. Rather than watch it rot, we decided to fully recycle our waste by buying a number of pigs, who roam freely under our peach trees, eating any windfalls. They are also fed any waste of our other fruit and veg – melons and tomatoes are their favourites. In winter we feed them waste apples and cheese-whey from the Combebelle Goat herd.
After 6 to 8 months – approximately twice the life-span of a normal pig intensively reared – we sell our pigs by half pig. The pigs are taken to the abattoir in Narbonne, and then butchered by a local professional butcher.
Customers can reserve a half or whole pig for 5 euros a kilo. A half pig is normally about 35 kilos of meat. For this price, the pig is butchered and the customer can specify how they would like the pig cut up. Sausages are an extra 2 euros a kilo.
